Umbria is a small wine producing region with some great wines, with a deep-rooted tradition of vine-growing and local grape varieties of high quality. The rediscovery of extraordinary fine grapes such as Sagrantino has led the region to becoming one of Italy’s most celebrated wine production areas today.

Cantina Novelli, created in 2000 by the dedication of the Novelli family, selected only the best 56 hectares for wine growing in over 800 hectares of family-owned land, principally located in the heart of the DOCG zone and specializing in local grape varieties.

Cantina Novelli’s mission is to recover and promote the native grape varieties. They have invested into several important projects. For instance, the recovery of Trebbiano Spoletino and Pecorino grapes (from pre-phylloxera rootstock) in collaboration with Professor Scienza of the University of Milan.

Also, they have created the first Sagrantino Rosé de Noir sparkling wine produced by traditional method. Stefano Novelli believed in this project which reveals a “hidden secret” ; did you know that an Italian Benedictine monk, Francesco Scacchi of Umbrian decent was the first to write about the art of making sparkling wine, fifty years before Dom Perignon.

    Tasting Notes:

An outstanding wine. A little known gem of Umbria's finest. Ranks amongst Italian great red wine tradition, beside its glorious neighbour, Tuscany.

This powerful and generous wine shows remarkable spicy notes such as cinnamon and nutmeg as well as black cherry. Sagrantino can produce a wine of very tight tannins. To counter this, it spends 18 months in new French oak to produce a really complex and accomplished wine.

Will match perfectly full-flavoured dishes, red meat, roast game and aged cheeses.
