When it comes to finding a peaceful place to retire, it does not come any better than this. Ask Franco and Franca Gatteschi who purchased this “poderi”  in 1990 overlooking this spectacular landscape, covering 41 hectares, mainly woodland and with only one hectare dedicated to vines.

The Gatteschi’s decided to create a small wine cellar to deal with the existing vineyard, and after a lot of hard work, the reward saw the birth of a Chianti Classico Riserva in 1997. By 2003, they had purchase another small property extending the estate to 4 hectares, all at 500 metres above sea level.

A grape by grape selection is carried out when harvesting. Fermentation takes place both in stainless steel and French oak vats (according to the grape selection), while ageing is primarily  in French oak tonneaux.

Podere Ciona now produces Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva, as well as their flagship wine "Le Diacce", a Merlot-based wine and two younger wines based on Sangiovese and Merlot grapes.

Made uniquely from Sangiovese grapes, this rosé reveals notes of red berries. Fruity on the palate, with a touch of caramel and moka.

The moderate acidity and persistent finish  for this medium to  full-bodied wine makes it  very pleasant.

    Tasting Notes:

Semifonte uses a fairly high percentage of the intriguing grape variety, Alicante Bouschet supported by classic Merlot.

    Surprisingly complex and fruity.

It would be appreciated to be drunk together with roasted or grilled meats (either white or red), as well as risottos and pastas.

    Tasting Notes:

Montegrossoli is a lighter version of its older brother, Chianti Classico Riserva.

A rather light and easy drinking wine with a pleasant fruity, plum and cherry nose with a hint of spices. It spends 6 months in French oak before being refined for a further 6 months in bottle.

It would be the perfect partner for tomato based pasta, grilled meat or hard cheeses.

Italian speciality Polpette alla Fiorentine (Traditionnal Florentine croquettes made from meat)

    Tasting Notes:

The flagship of the Estate. This Merlot, blended with a little Alicante Bouschet reveals all its nobility. It is produced deep in the Chianti Classico hills, at over 500 metres altitude.

Full of complexity,  from spices to chocolate and smokiness. The medium and soft tannins make it a remarkable,  clean and well-balanced wine. An astonishing wine.

It would be enjoyed best when accompanying roasted and grilled red meat and game as well as mature cheeses.

    Tasting Notes:

This Classic Chianti Riserva is a fine example of the region's reputation. Only 500 cases a year are produced, after having spent more than 18 months in oak.

Intense aromas of black cherries with a touch of vanilla and cedar wood. A very robust and compact wine with a long finale, suitable for ageing.

Perfectly complements meat dishes such as lamb and wild duck, as well as semi-mature cheeses.

Italian speciality Ossibucci alla Toscana (traditionnal  osso bucco  Toscan style)
